IF YOU’RE IN any way tuned in to the Ireland of 2017, you’ll have heard of one or other of the Kavanagh brothers.

John is a UFC coach who trains some guy called Conor McGregor, while James has made his name amongst the young people as an influencer and Snapchat star.

The pair appeared on the Late Late last night to chat about their careers and their family life – and their mam Margaret was asked how they were as children.

While she had nothing but nice things to say about John (“He was an angel”), she had stronger words about her youngest son:

He only became human at age 20. He terrorised us… He stayed out. He wouldn’t eat the food I cooked. He slagged our house, it was “too small”. John wasn’t like that! And [their sister] Ann wasn’t like that. He was so bad we sent him to boarding school.

James said that in hindsight, he can see that this was all because he was being bullied for being gay – but his life turned around when one of his classmates stepped in to stop it.

I’d get elbows in the back, people would just shout ‘gay’ at me – so I always associated being gay with this negative thing. I can only see this in hindsight, but I was horrible to my parents because I was getting badly bullied in school and I had zero friends… I always say if you see anyone being bullied in school or anywhere, be the one to step in and ask them how they are. That changed everything for me.
